On Friday night, the Rockets played Belleville Spirits.  After trailing most of the game, the girl’s tied it up by scoring 7 points in the last minute and a half.  Unfortunately they came up short in overtime, eventually losing 39 – 38.
On Saturday the Rockets were back at St. Mark with games against the Pelham Panthers and Naismith who they beat by 12 and 17 points respectively.
Sunday morning the girls faced the Markham Gators.  A win in this game would put the Rockets in the gold medal game.  Markham, who had beaten the Rockets by 20+ in Newmarket a month prior, came out flying and took an early 13 point lead into the 2nd quarter.  However, with grit and tenacity they showed all year, the girls eventually came back and beat Markham by 1 on a late field goal.
Due to points for and against, the close win over Markham set up a rematch with them in the gold medal game.  This game saw Rockets take control early and hold a ten point advantage for most of the game.  Markham made the game close after hitting back to back threes late in the fourth quarter however, Rockets held on for the gold medal win!
This team of girls,  most of whom only have 1 or 2 years experience, have worked incredibly hard over the last 2 years.  They have developed, mostly from scratch, into skilled and savvy girls who are a pleasure to coach.
Thanks so much to the parents who have not only been supportive during all the bumps and bruises of this growth process, but have also been super respectful of the coaches.  It is hugely appreciated.
Finally, thanks so much to Dave 1, Dave 2, and Jessica for the their dedication, support and expertise through all the ups and downs of the season.  Our newest coach Jessica Hearn, like Sarah Buckingham last year, brought much needed experience and perspective to the bench.
